God bless this revelation!

Hopefully Yahoo will pick up steam and get some more usage. Even better - hopefully Google will do some serious thinking about their current algo and filters, etc....

I was curious why this discussion is taking place in Paid Inclusion/Trusted Feed forum? I was checking out one of my main sites in the new Yahoo and I am doing very well. Actually I am doing better than I ever dreamed that is possible with any search engine. I never paid for any inclusion or even directories like Yahoo.
I am still relatively new in the whole SEO as this is only my first year in SEO.

Is there also free listings in the new Yahoo?

Absolutely. I'm in there without paying anything. But it does appear that a Yahoo directory listing helps (I noticed that for one of my clients) and Barry seems quite certain that PFI gives you a boost in the SERP as well.

Just to clarify, to submit a site to Yahoo Search for free you need to have a Yahoo account. Also, Yahoo claims that it does not guarantee inclusion.

I didn't find anything about submitting a site to the search, even when I was logged in to Yahoo. I did find this, however:

Yahoo! Search crawls the web every 2-4 weeks and automatically finds new content for indexing. If pages already in the Yahoo! Search index link to your site, it will be considered for inclusion in the next update of the index. Getting your site listed in major directory services such as the Yahoo! Directory and DMOZ is an excellent way to be sure that there are links to your site.

Hm... some other interesting stuff. This seems to be a modified version of the Inktomi guidelines.

Use a "description" meta-tag and write your description accurately and carefully. After the title, the description is the most important draw for users. Make sure the document title and description attract the interest of the user but also fit the content on your site.

Use a "keyword" meta-tag to list key words for the document. Use a distinct list of keywords that relate to the specific page on your site instead of using one broad set of keywords for every page.

This one's from http://help.yahoo.co...ranking-02.html
I knew INK mildly recommended the use of the keyword tag, but they're saying it right out, and adding the meta description too. Maybe those tags are going to be a lot more important that they'd been in the past.

Will they not go to a CPC model like Looksmart did?

I don't think they will follow Looksmart's mistakes.

The only information I could get out of PositionTech about the Yahoo PFI was the press release from Inktomi which has already been posted.

What it does mean that the free trial for existing customers will be for pages with Inkomi PFI

Actually, I just read the Yahoo Inclusion guidelines and apparently they no longer offer free directory inclusion for commercial sites. You have to pay.

Since that's not what it said the last time I was there, I can only assume this is a change from a couple days ago.

I thought it had been that way for years, Ian -- that only non-commercial sites could get into the directory for free. I remember getting my old company in for free years ago, and deciding not to send them a correction when we moved to a different town because I was afraid they'd make us pay to remain in the directory. That was in 2000.

Yeah, qwerty, that was what I thought too. Something like $299 to be considered for listing in commercial categories in the .com directory, and if you were accepted, $299 per year to be allowed to stay there.

From what I recall, though, there was some possibility of getting in cheaper or even free to regional categories, at least for a while. Hadn't checked that recently, so I dunno if that was still there or not.

And, of course, if you were a non-commercial site in non-commercial category, you could submit for free. Just no guarantees on how long you'd be waiting for a decison on your submission (kinda like DMOZ! )

But I could be totally wrong. I haven't paid much attention to the Yahoo directory in quite some time.

The new Yahoo results are very exciting. Finally some competition for Google.

Interesting thing -- At my home computer I see the new Yahoo results but at work I still get the old Google Yahoo results ( just a few towns aways ). Wonder when the switch will be 100% complete.

So it's breaking onto 2 markets:

Google, using DMOZ as backup and authority
Inktomi, using Yahoo as backup and authority

It's probably a good idea to combine human editing with spidering. I wonder how long it's going to be before we hear the announcement of MSN's new directory?

Oh, wait, here it is... http://beta.search.m...om/default.aspx

And from the looks of it, it's hand edited and being started from scratch.

Nice find on the MSN directory.
I wonder if they will be accepting editors?
I would like to edit the corporate anti trust category.
