Snippet:
Sources tell ResourceShelf that by the end of the year the "best of" AltaVista search technology and the "best of" AllTheWeb search technology will be merged into a single product. If this happens and the technology works well it will likely be one powerful product for for advanced web searchers.

Hi Robert:
I happen to think that ATW is a great search technology right now, but until they can deliver significant traffic its an also run search engine.
Altavista has been spidering aggressively, and I often see listings for sites I am checking showing the "refreshed in the past 24 hours" tag, but again until a #1 ranking on a popular keyword will drive some traffic it too is an also ran.
I really wonder if Yahoo is going to keep all the brands they own competing with each other in the long run.

I agree that ATW is very aggressive about spidering. It wasn't that long ago that they were going back and forth with Google for the title of most pages in the index. However, if you look at the SERPs in ATW, you find an awful lot of irrelevant, spammy pages.
I think they have a long way to go in filtering if they're going to start serving up truly relevant results.

I think AltaVista have losed its popularity and so this merge can help it to attract attention to itself.
