I'm just reading Google Adsense for Dummies right now and it's talking about the program policies and the need for original content.
I was planning on putting up some articles written by authors who own a product I'm trying to sell as an affiliate on the site, but am also planning on using adsense.
Would this get me banned?
And secondly, I have been running a website that uses a pop-up newsletter opt-in box and am also running adsense on that, but so far there havent' been any issues (knock on wood). In the policies though, it says no sites with pop-ups or pop-unders.
Maybe I am misunderstanding exactly what the policies mean?
Any thoughts would be great - especially on the affiliate articles up there.

You need to re-read the terms and conditions of your Adsense account Maria. You can start here.
Don't rely on a book to get the terms. Things can change too often, plus if memory serves there are some different terms and conditions depending upon where you're located. You can review the localized terms for your area here.
I don't do the Adsense thing so I'm not positive what's okay and what's not. But you'll want to make sure, because if you break the rules of the program you will not only not be paid, but you'll also likely have your account shut down.
The reason I say you need to read the details is that the last time I looked I don't believe Adulu's statement is correct. In that I don't think at that time there was a strict prohibition against all pop-ups or pop-unders. Instead it was more of a prohibition against excessive use of pop-ups/unders, and pop-ups that interfered with navigation elements of the page.
But that's all going from memory, and I haven't looked at the Adsense T&C in months. So you'll want to read the rules and make sure you're following them.
