Definitely do the blog for your customers. As far as ranking goes, the general lesson I get from hanging out here is that by helping your customers you will ultimately help your rankings... but don't do it just for rankings.

In your blog post you will naturally stumble upon a key phrase that someone will be searching for and that will be your best qualified customer. Someone looking for a "hands-free wobnitz" will come across your article about how you just added that feature and you have a purchase without ever giving thought to ranking for that phrase.

a well written blog post can bring a lot of good trafic I did one just before christmas on a new special edition Audi and now its the 4th most popular page on the site and beats audi uk for the term :-)

I also live bloged the G phone launch which brought a ton of trafic to the site we did it for.

Is it necessary for the blog to be on your site? I have a blog hosted on Google blogger (I felt that being Google it would be better) Each article/posting has a link to my site in some form once only. It is not linked from my site.

Am I wrong?

Yes. Being on Google doesn't give it any special powers.

Plus, they can take it down anytime they want and all your posts will be gone.

Plus Blogger limits what you can do in SEO terms versus having a WordPress blog.
