Would creating a blog on my website help with my overall ranking? The blog, of course, would be populated with topics related to my business.

There's no guarantee that the process of adding a blog increase your rankings; however, that being said, by adding a blog, you're adding more opportunities to provide additional content on the site. I don't know if you've ever heard of the phrase "Content is King" but by adding fresh original content to your website on a weekly basis, you're increasing the chances of ranking well.

Do keep in mind, that your primary function for adding a blog should be for the user's experience, not for rankings. Blogs with keyword stuffed content do nothing to help you...with users or search engines.

Not in and of itself, no.

Thanks for the help Katz! My plan for the blog was to inform my customers about cool new features, talk about my current projects, and recommend helpful services...these posts will naturally contain keywords related to my site and will also link to some higher ranked sites. I mainly wanted to include the blog just as a helpful resource for my customers and then I began to wonder if it would also be a good tool for improving ranking.

I agree, the blog may serve its purpose as an interactive part of your site.. With this, you can easily know what your customers like and enhance your business thru their responses..

Definitely do the blog for your customers. As far as ranking goes, the general lesson I get from hanging out here is that by helping your customers you will ultimately help your rankings... but don't do it just for rankings.

In your blog post you will naturally stumble upon a key phrase that someone will be searching for and that will be your best qualified customer. Someone looking for a "hands-free wobnitz" will come across your article about how you just added that feature and you have a purchase without ever giving thought to ranking for that phrase.

It will help as long as you use it properly and play to a blogs strengths which are time sensative information for example when the Gphone was launched I was watching the live launch event in NYC and writing a blog as the event unfolded and posted it about 10 seconds after the event finished.

if you are quick and can get a news worthy story out quick you can get some good positions plus trafic and links for a blog post see "google g phone"

in october we had >2400 visits for the search term "g phone"

It can help but you have to work at it

Agreeing with Deverill - I'm a massive believer in providing something useful to your visitors. Ranking for things that show up in your blog may well bring in people who then go on to buy from you, but ultimately having a blog means that you've opened the lines of communication up. It's good, but do it well.

Absolutely. It is very helpful if you blog the content of your site, add links to it and other useful links. SE's trust more blog hosting and it is easy to index.

As already said, blogs are not some magical force. They're a content delivery method. Nothing more, nothing less.

The trick is getting quality content out there. Not the software you use to get it out there.

Yes, I believe have a blog with helpful and fresh content always help getting the pages indexed. To get it indexed, don't bury your blog too deep, it should be on the top level don't you sub directories, if possible. Once it gets indexed, start distributing the article to various article directories.

I would like to ask a question too, many people are asking me for rss feed subscription of my blog. If people are subscribing to my blog rss feed, does that help in ranking purpose? Please give reasons whatever the answer be.

Thanks a lot,
Ravi

I say if you have the opportunity to make a good enough blog, go for it, it is a way of interacting with your customers, and if you put good information on some specific subjects the blog may show up on search engines, so yes, it may not be the ultimate and most effective way to get your customers, but it sure will help if you do it right.
