Hi Everybody ,

Keyword research is very important, but at the same time pretty confusing. I have developped a tool to make better sense out of the information that comes from for instance WordTracker. I am busy with evaluating this tool and hope to have your help too.

It can be found here: Keyword Effectiveness Rank (KER)

It seems that for some people it is not possible to open an excell sheet in their browser. There for I made an example page with real data in it that has a picture of what it should look like. It can be found here: Example of a Keyword Effectiveness Rank page

I would like to ask you all to try out the KER and respond in this thread or to my email adress with your opinions.

Thank you very much. :aloha:

Best regards,

Peter

Cool thing, Peter!

Before I was choosing the effective keywords just looking through all this data and make a decision according to my experience and intuition. Now process of choosing the effective keywords could be more strict :learn:

:P :)

Hi Peter, can you tell us how this differs from KEI? How do you calcuate your KER?

Yes, you can find the logic behind it, including the formula in the page, but here I will give a short description:

I believe that the lower a site ranks, the less strong its power of competition is. For instance; the competition power of 10.000 sites is just twice as big as the competition power of 1000 sites. The same logic goes for the popularity of a phrase. You will like a word with a popularity of 100.000 only twice a much as a word with a popularity of 10.000 .

In order to get an idea of the real value a keyword has for your web site you need to compare it with something. Comparing it with the average popularity and average competition of your chozen keywords, will give a result that is understandable. The KER shows a result in percentages. A keyword with a KER of 100% is an average keyword. A keyword with a KER of 400% is a very good keyword.

The KER calculation is relative. It gives a rank based on the keywords you have chozen. In one set of keywords the KER can be high, while in an other set of keywords, the KER for the same word can be low. This makes perfect sense because a keyword can be important for one web site and be totally meaningless for another web site.

If you want to see all the math too check out the Keyword Effectiveness Rank

I hope this explains it a bit.

Peter,

I've never used log functions in Excel. Can I use the formula exactly as presented on your web page in Excel. Or can you send me a copy -- off line to bob@compar.com -- of the Excel file?

Compar,

Just double click on a KER cell in the web page and you will see the formula,..

You can also cut and paste the sheet to your excell document (Cell A1 to F28).

Let me know if it doesn't work and I will email you the sheet.

Regards,

Peter

PS. Don't forget to publish your findings here. Thanks.

The picture of the excel sheet on your web site appears to be exactly that, a picture. It can't be clicked on or cut and pasted. Is it not just a screen shot of your excel page? Please just email a copy of the excel file.

Dimok,

Great to see that you tried the KER. I see that you changed the cells that calculate the averages. I think I will add a cell in which the number of words that are actually being used can be filled in.

Compar,

The excell sheet should show up in the page. The one you refer to is an example sheet. But it seems that some people have problems seeing the sheet in their browser,... Which browser do you use?

It is all in development now,.. if the excell sheet is not the best way to do it I will have to find a better way to do it. All feed back is very much appreciated.

Thanks,

Peter

I have used both Netscape 7.1 and IE 6.0 with SP1 installed. I still can't see the excel sheet. Why won't you just email it to me????????

Compar,

I will email it to you. Sorry about this. I just am trying to figure out why some people can not see the sheet in the page. You will have it within an hour.
