My organization is redesigning its global navigation and would like to be able to distinguish clicks going to a page from the global nav vs. clicks to that page from regular links throughout our site. One solution I have considered for tracking this is Brian Clifton's recommendation in "Advanced Web Metrics" to add distinct parameters to the separate links:
I would like to implement this but am concerned about potential adverse effects this could have on the indexing of our pages and SEO. Would our Google listings show that parameter on a results page (and artificially pad the credit for clicks coming from the global nav)? Also, am I causing a duplicate content issue or diluting the value of the link by doing this sort of tracking?
