(Domain name used is fictional any similarity to a domain name living or dead is purely coincidental!)

Example:

I want to sell eggs in the UK and I have the domain name FreshEggs.co.uk and also managed to get the name FreshEggs.com

I only want to target the UK market but my boss wants to use the .com name as apposed the .co.uk name as he thinks it's more webby! (whatever that means?)

What argument could I use to persuade him otherwise?

I know using the .com name sounds international and/ or American but using the .com name will this hinder me in .co.uk specific searches?

Also if I do just a simple redirect from the .co.uk to the .com does this work well with spiders or is it best to host the name on the same IP.

Many thanks

BBB

www.FreshEggs.com one egg to rule them all!

Tell him to look to see how many .com sites are listed on Yahoo UK for UK searches, then try Lycos UK, then try AltaVista UK, then try AOL UK and then how about Freeserve UK searches all ignoring sponsored listings.

Then tell him that MSN UK demotes .com sites in favour of .co.uk sites - but he will do well on MSN US! Hotbot UK does the same on worldwide searches but removes .coms entirely if it comes to UK only searches!

Do a 301 redirect from .com to the .co.uk. This way you get the search engine benefit of being a .co.uk and the type-in browser benefit of being a .com ;)
