Retrieving Lost Google Api Key
Posted 08 September 2008 - 02:10 PM
Does anybody know if Google would provide me with the key if I contact them? I haven't tried contacting them yet, I have the feeling I'll just be ignored. I'm not even sure which email I used or if the API key was even sent by email. Running a search on my email for google api, or api key doesn't show any results.

Don, to my knowledge there is no way to retrieve an API license code from Google. I'm not sure there ever was, honestly. Or if there wasn't I sure don't remember seeing it.
Do you happen to still have those old experimental files around anywhere? Either on a server somewhere or on a PC somewhere? If it's on a server there should also be a version of NuSOAP somewhere, since that's what's always been used to connect to the Google API servers. Typically that file is going to be named something like nusoap.php
If you do, I'd trying doing a bulk search of any possible experiment files for the phrase api.google.com. That connection address for Google API searches has been consistent pretty much from the beginning. So if you find the phrase in a file somewhere you're quite likely to find your old Google API key too.

Will try that search though I'm pretty sure it died with the old hd. Unfortunately at the time I had a dedicated box with one hd and no backups so when that died all was lost.

yeah, nothing. I just searched:
find / | xargs grep 'api\.google\.com'

Hi, I had Google API Key which I was using on GoogleRankings.com to find the rankings. However, I just come to know that it is no more working. It is showing the error message "Unable to contact Google API service. Please try again later" Now, it has been more than 2 days and whenever I tried to find rankings on GoogleRankings.com, I get the same error message.
I also signed up at code.google.com/apis/maps/signup.html and got very long key and codes but I did not find that key workable to find rankings.
Could you please help me in getting the new Google API key that I can use it to find rankings? Thank you.
It will be the great help from you!

That's an Ajax key. It won't work in any tools that require a Soap key.
The error message you received is a pretty generic one. It could be because of something wrong with the script that runs on that site or it could be produced for numerous other reasons. The first thing to do is try your Soap API key while using a different tool on a different site to see if that works. If it does then you'd want to notify the folks at that site to see if something has changed on their end recently.
