I have two bits of info to add in here.

1- Many user studies of internet habits/human behavior have concluded that the top of page 468x60 .gif or.jpg type of banner ad (size really not making much of a difference) is next to worthless. Mostly because the internet, at this point, has conditioned most people that frequent the 'net to ignore the top few pixels of every page because it has proven to always be ads...so we, by nature ignore them. That said, it also indicates that top-of-page navigation schemes are also less effective for that same reason.

2- I had a client (a new and refurb IT gear seller) that was just getting totally frustrated (and annoying the hell out of me) cuz his pages were not on the front page within a couple of weeks on queries for any and every product he sells. Well, in his frustration and lack of patience, he ended up paying google (or yahoo, I forget) for their "sponsorship" link placement and he told me he has seen a noticable increase in traffic and sales.

Not saying either statement will help you, just a couple of related anticdotes for your consideration.
