Okay, I know that Google needs incoming links to a site to find it and that good quality links help significantly with the ranking.

Where possible I try and get clients to register with Yahoo UK as it guarantees that the site will be spidered by Google but most won't pay the £200 one-off fee or pay for any submissions. As a result I'm left with doing entering them to free directories.

Obviously DMOZ is in theory a sensible place to submit to but it is very difficult to submit a site and get it listed.

I usually try and submit them to Click4Choice, Splut, Gimspy, shop.co.uk, shopfinder UK, www.shoppingdirectories.co.uk, gasta.co.uk , www.uk-onlineshopping.co.uk , www.presents4them.com, shops1st.com, link.freelancewebs.net...

However, I'm concerned that these aren't getting the sites spidered by Google.

An additional problem is that many of the clients are reluctant to have a reciprocal links back to directories.

Any suggestions....

:)

You can also try GoGuides.org and JoeAnt.com. For both directories you need to become an editor (GoGuides will check you and JoeAnt will let you in immediately) to submit a site for free.

I always look for niche directories relevant to the client industry (travel, food, clothing, etc) that are solely about those topics. Usually they will at least have a high PR value on the front page at least, but some might not be spidered very well by Google.

Even if they aren't, I still submit the client links, because you never know -they could still turn into an additional source of traffice.

I believe that DMOZ is an important link to get for Google. I've never had a problem getting listed. In fact most sites I've added to DMOZ have been added very quickly (less than a week). Perhaps it's because many of mine are going in a Regional category (under Ireland), and maybe the editors are less busy. Perhaps you could try this (sounds like you are in the UK).

I've had sites' PR improve a couple of points when the link from DMOZ got picked up by Google.

Don't forget the Google Directory itself. I thought it was the same as DMOZ, but you can submit to both.

Do a search on Google for "web directory" uk (or whatever topic the site is about).

Most good directories don't require a reciprocal link, so they are a good source. A lot of my sites are accommodation providers. Most related directories are paid inclusion, which makes it harder.

Google Directory IS the same as DMOZ -

one submission does the trick, no need to submit to 'both" - they end up as one submission in the same queue.

With DMOZ I quite often find that the I can access the submission page even when I do it in the morning when the US is asleep - yes I am in the UK. The other problem with DMOZ it takes forever to for the sites to get listed due to the backlog
