My client has his archived blogs showing all the way to 2004. The menu is SOOOO long. I'm sure nobody pokes thru the old stuff any more.
Should I advise him to just show the last year's posts?
The old ones will still turn up in the SERPS if someone searches for them right, even if they are no longer visible in the menu.

They definitely can still be traffic.
Can't you just create separate landing pages for 2004 posts, 2005 posts, etc. With just the years in the menu?
Or just a link to Archived Posts in the menu, and from there you have a landing page with which year to choose, etc.
