If you're in the USA, you might also check the listings at Salary.com and/or PayScale.com to see what they show. You can search on various SEM-related job titles and see what comes up. They both offer basic reports for free, which should be sufficient for a high-level analysis. If you want more detail, it will cost you, although I don't think the "premium" reports are terribly expensive at either one.

Not as much as they can make from applying their skills to their own sites, if the SEM is any good at all.

Very interesting. Is SEM a person that handles both SEO + PPC?

And possibly even conversion testing and ROI analysis some day. Not today for the most part, but in my humble opinion SEM should have a conversion/roi component.

SEM = A person capable of:
- PPC; strategy-research-implementation-monitoring-roi-client management-analysis-reporting
- SEO; putting all the nice elements on a page in a nice way and getting a web page found for the correct terms-explaining Google is not your b**** but you sure as hell feel like Googles (usually to clients whose websites are 2 days old & not in the top results page yet....)
- ANALYSIS; Learning the software & staying up to date with the latest toy it gives you (this is FUN), finding out that "Yay the traffic is coming in from natural sources and ROI is fab" OR "Oh crap will this ever work?"- this page isn't handling the conversion well, we need to make changes or split test
- ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOUR CLIENT/COMPANY MARKETS ONLINE WITH
