Changing Site Content Of Site With Good Pr
Posted 12 June 2008 - 07:38 AM
I have several sites with nice PR (2, 3 and 4). I would like to change the content of these sites. With this I mean changing everything. For example, one of the sites now concerns cars. I'm now going to remove all the content and replace it with a new website that concerns music. The design, text, images, literally everything will be completely different than before and also the subject that the website is about will also be totally different.
My question is now if this new site would keep its PR and would keep the same google authority as it had before? I was wondering about this because I can imagine that google would become suspicious in case of such a sudden change of the whole website content. What are your thoughts on this? Anyone, has experience with this?
Second question is if links from the renewed website would be equally valuable as links from other websites concerning the NEW topic of the website. So let's say I would change the car website into the music website, would then be links from this new music website to other music related websites be valuable for the sites to which is linked to? And would the value be the same as with links from a page with comparable PR and google authority but of which the topic has always been music?

No. You'd lose whatever anchor text bump you're getting from those links since they now point to a page/site that has nothing to do with the previous subject matter. The links themselves would still count, but you'd lose the anchor text bump.
In either case I wouldn't expect the site to rank we well for its new keyword phrases in the beginning as it did previously. After all, you're changing the entire relevance of the site for its keyword profile.

I have an old site that I want to change the topic/theme also. It has some nice old links (a permanent yahoo link) but the topic is something I'm not interested anymore so I want to change.
Do you see any penalties from changing the focus of the site? How long until Google will reclassify the site with its new topic? I know it won't lose it's Pagerank... but I'm more concerned with how Google sees the site's topic and what effect it will have on ranking.
I know I won't see any anchor-text bonus for the irrelevant previous links.... but I should see a bonus because of the site age and from some of the already established incoming authority links (even if they are not relevant).
Anyone here gone through a site overhaul with changing topics/themes?
Thanks for any help on this subject.

And a loss of inbound links can cause a loss of PR, as well as a loss of rankings.

No, but you will lose rankings on the words that are no longer relevant. But that's not a penalty.
Prolly as soon as they re-index it.

Not exactly sure what your personal description of Google authority is, but how could a site possibly keep the same Google authority it had before if the basic content of the site is 100% different? The original site's "authority" was based on the subject matter it contained. When you changed that, you lost authority on that subject, and thus, the site.
Even the links that are left will be of less benefit to you because your site content will no longer relate to the link text being used. If your link says Internet Deals on Hot Cars but that leads to a page about music, unless you are selling a CD from the music group The Cars, there is no way you are going to get the same bang for your buck.
