Hey guys,
I'm kinda new at this, and figuring out SEO myself for my company. We currently write a press release once every few months and they get picked up by 4 or 5 other sites (max). Pretty weak, i know. The content is exactly the same, and it isn't very easy reading either. It's a very salesy message as well. to fix that, I'm trying to push them to write more interesting content. Not about the product itself, but about the issues that was motivation for the product's development. Basically wanting to address the need for the item.
If I publish that article and someone picks it up, what determines the relevance of the content to me? Is it the website itself, or the content of the article they picked? I'm trying to figure out if Writing an article about other issues surrounding the product (making me seem like an authority in the matter) but to a site that talks about the topic is going to be more effective than publishing something mediocre in a relevant site.
This is just an example. Not a product of mine.
Example:
Product: Fire extinguisher
Article: Types of fires / How to treat burns

Press releases and and articles are completely different animals. Your press releases should be to write about news.
With articles, you can write about anything you want that would be of interest to people who read them.

And when I do that on other sites, or let other sites pick it up, what's more important? Whether the content is directly related to my site, or if the other site is relevant to mine?

You're thinking about this all backwards.
You write articles because you want to help people and provide them with information that they may not have otherwise have known.
The rest will all fall into place once you do that.

Well, in time I know that it will. But from a business standpoint I'd like to know which one of those factors will affect my rankings more. I don't rank very well now, but I'd like to, and this is one of the efforts I"m using to try and do that.

Okay, if you want an answer it's Neither is more important. Both are equally important.
But what's more important thing in your scenario, if you can work it in there, is getting your keywords in the article or press release. Preferrably as a link pointing at your site where your keywords are the anchor text.

I'm definitely going to do that.
