I'm putting together a web page on how to tell if you are dealing with a reputable optimization company, and how to recognize the scamsters. Got some points I need to make? I know it's hard to believe that sosanso@gmail.com isn't legit, but what else can I point out, other than the fact that if you are any good at this business, you won't need to advertise.

I wouldn't say advertise because we all advertise one way or another. But real optimizers don't usually spam mail you or do direct phone sales.

A real optimizer won't guarantee a specific ranking or claim a special relationship with the search engines. They won't offer you a quick fix for $50 or claim results in days. They won't stuff words on your pages or hide anything in your code.

You get the idea...

Real SEOs do indeed advertise and they do marketing too! Just like any smart business.

But to your point of warning signs, if they won't tell you how they are getting you rankings or traffic, that's a red flag for sure.

They won't say that they'll submit your site to all the search engines! It's amazing to me how many people think you need to do that instead of getting links to the site in question so that search engines can find it! I think it's one of the biggesst myths perpetrated about SEO.
