Can part of a website be moved to a new domain without getting sandboxed?
For example, let's say I have a website about animals, called AnimalsRock.com. It contains many subdirectories, each specific to an animal. The dog part of the site (www.animalsrock.com/dogs/) has become so successful that I want to put it on its own domain, DogsRock.com. This is a new domain which is not yet hosted and has no history.
If I 301 all the pages from animalsrock.com/dogs/ to the new domain, would it be reasonable to expect the PR, links, and rankings to accrue to the new domain in short order, for a fairly seamless transition?

New domains always have the potential to face the aging delay.
That said, these days it seems that it may possibly be a non-issue if 301-redirected properly.

What Jill said + keep the new sites content relatively similar to the pages you're slapping a 301 on till everything follows through would be my suggestion.
