I am fairly new to Adsense and things have been going well so far.

One of my wide leaderboard ads on one of my pages is all of a sudden displays a wacky new ad that is not what I expected.

I want the four ads in the standard ad font, but what has started displaying is a single ad with a blaring oversized font - it's almost like an image ad. And it is completely out of the context of my site.

Please see the hopefully self explanatory attached file to see for yourself.....

I've already placed the URL of the ad in my competitave filter, but won't this just happen again with another similar incoming ad?

That's not uncommon -- I see that quite a bit on my site. I believe this happens when an ad is doing very well on your site (high CTR), so Google gives it more prominence.

It may have a higher than normal CPC, too, so blocking it might not be your best move. Of course, if it's badly out of context then it might be in the best interest of your users to keep it blocked.

When you see a text ad that takes up more room than normal, you may be seeing either a placement-targeted or a keyword-targeted text ad.

Placement-targeted text ads work on a on a pay-per-impression basis and appear when advertisers select specific sites they want to run their ads on. Their ads are then expanded to fill a larger space.

Keyword-targeted text ads may also be expanded when AdSense determines that a larger ad will perform better for a particular page...$$$

It is not currently possible to opt out of displaying expanded text ads.
