I have had what I consider a minor miracle and have been listed in the DMOZ after a year of trying. Is there a rough guideline to how long it takes Google to find the DMOZ listing as a link?

Thanks in advance.

WHen you say "trying", what were you doing? If by "trying", you submitted more than once, then that is probably why it took so long. Every time you resubmit, you just overwrite the previous submission with teh new date and move your site to the back if the editor sorts the pool by date (most do)

As soon as Google crawls the page.

Are you asking because you are expecting an improvement in rankings from the DMOZ listing? ....don't hold your breath.

The Nissan Mod site in your signature (if that the one you are talking about) is probably not going to be listed in DMOZ due to a lack of unique content (eg the forum is almost empty; the mods are just links to other sites; the 'news' is just links to other sites)

So what is the point of submitting to DMOZ and Yahoo Directory if it doesn't really help you?

Its just a link like any other link. It will help as much as any other links will.

I just found another thread here basically asking the same question and the experts here don't believe that a DMOZ listing is that significant. Well, at least it is another link.

Thanks for the comments.

Yeah the site is still under construction... it is very much a work in progress.

Not much point, really, if you're just looking for SEO help. The point is supposed to be that it would drive traffic to your site from people browsing DMOZ.

Then you probably should have read the DMOZ rules first before submitting.

Ahem.

QUOTE
Step One

Determine whether a site is appropriate for submission to the ODP:
  • Do not submit mirror sites. Mirror sites are sites that contain identical content, but have altogether different URLs.
  • Do not submit URLs that contain only the same or similar content as other sites you may have listed in the directory. Sites with overlapping and repetitive content are not helpful to users of the directory. Multiple submissions of the same or related sites may result in the exclusion and/or deletion of those and all affiliated sites.
  • Do not disguise your submission and submit the same URL more than once. Example: http://www.dmoz.org and http://www.dmoz.org/index.html
  • Do not submit any site with an address that redirects to another address.
  • The Open Directory has a policy against the inclusion of sites with illegal content. Examples of illegal material include child pornography; libel; material that infringes any intellectual property right; and material that specifically advocates, solicits or abets illegal activity (such as fraud or violence).
  • Do not submit sites "under construction." Wait until a site is complete before submitting it. Sites that are incomplete, contain "Under Construction" notices, or contain broken graphics or links aren't good candidates for the directory.
  • Submit pornographic sites to the appropriate category under Adult.
  • Submit non-English sites to the appropriate category under World.
  • Don't submit sites consisting largely of affiliate links.

(Emphasis added by me.)

Source: http://www.dmoz.org/add.html

This is the page that comes up when you click the "Suggest URL" link on DMOZ's home page. There is a link to this page right up at the top of any detail category "Suggest URL" page, and a version of the same bullet list appears immediately below the URL entry box.

The DMOZ rules really aren't that hard to find, even for a humble webmaster such as myself. Of course, I consider myself a "competent" webmaster, so perhaps that's where the difference lies. smile.gif
