I've seen a few threads about Google Image SEO but none of them really touch on the "top 3" image results that often come up when searching key words obviously you get to be in the the 1st 3 images by your own optimization but how/why do images sometimes come up on the main results page? (if that doesnt really make any sense try searching the words "turntable needle" and take a peek at the bottom of the page)

Yeah after the recent Google update( I dont remember the name), you will get video, image, news results also in the main search pages. It has been quite sometime since they had started this type.

I'm just wondering why you get these results one some searches but not on others and if there is a way to maximize your images so they appear on the page or if it's totally random and not worth pursuing.

That's all part of "Universal Search" if you do some searches about that topic you should find some more info.

I just picked up an artists site for SEO...this is one of the things I want to make happen. Having his artwork .jpg's show up in the rankings would be awesome. Haven't seen it done effectively yet, and I'll let you know how it goes. Got to really experiment with this puppy.

I would love to see a paper on your testing results once you are finished. Is that possible?

I'll probably do that - I'm thinking that this is a long ways off, as I'm completely revamping this site, I'll probably get it sandboxed. It's not ranked now, so the penalty isn't much other than the #%#$@#$%!!! delay.
