For search engine purposes? It doesn't matter 99% of the time.
New domains are going to start out from scratch, obviously. Old expired domains are going to be reset, so will also start out from scratch too, The 1% when it might matter is if the old domain had been burned to the ground by the previous owner, which could take some time and effort to get Unbanned in the worst cases.
That's pretty rare to have to deal with however. So use the domain that best fits your business goals and will have the best shot at giving you the ability to build a memorable brand.
