Just playing devil's advocate to point out possible flaws in logic.
Besides, as I believe I said before in this thread, if Google or any of the others were silly enough to put much weight on click thru's so that they had a ranking effect it would be absolute child's play for me or any other code jockey to set up a little application that would look exactly like a real user --or actually 1,000+ real users-- coming through a proxy, conduct a search, "click" on the site I wanted to get a boost and do it all completely automatically 24/7/365 without anyone ever having to lift a finger. We're talking really, really easy from the coding perspective. Easy even to have it mask as different browsers and accept cookies just like a normal browser. It would take me less than 30 minutes to build.
If they want to do that, I say they should go for it. Cuz then it would be loads easier for me to get any site to rank #1 in its field, without leaving a single clue for competitors to figure out what I was doing. Of course if they're going to make it that easy I might just have to change my hat to a much darker color.
<edit to add>
Maybe I'll have find the 30 minutes to create the little app and test it out on a few competitors sites just to confirm once and for all if there's a positive effect, negative effect or no effect at all.
