I work for a relatively large service-based company. We receive most of our business through PPC so Google is very important to us. We have also been working hard for many years on improving our positioning in the natural listings and up until now we've done quite well and are listed in the top 10 for many of our main keywords.

The website is now PR 4 and a very informative website and various SEO companies over the years have worked to make sure the layout and wording etc. is Search engine-friendly.

We have recently taken on a new SEO company to deal with our link-building and I received my first link report a couple of weeks ago which has worried me a bit:

A friend of mine who works hard on link-building for his own website has informed me that Google are cracking down on paid links. The links they have built look relatively spammy to me - many are on non-related websites in random areas of the page and many of the websites' page ranks are very low (0-2). What is your opinion on this? I have a contract with the company for one year but I would imagine I would have no problem building a case if the work they are doing could be detremental the site.

I appreciate your help.

What you can do about itl depends upon what your contract with this company says ClickClick.

From the sound of it those links probably aren't going to help you all that much. They shouldn't hurt you either, but I rather doubt you're going to see the positive movement in either ranking benefits or increase in pre-qualified traffic you probably expected. Which is the point behind link building.

If they look spammy to you using your eyeballs, imagine how spammy they look to an automated search engine. Chances are they won't count towards any link pop or PR within Google and are a waste of money.

Thanks for this information. The problem is if I find a way to pull out now (or at any point in the future) all of these links will be lost because they are no longer being paid for - won't this look even more spammy to Google?!
