I would like to know if there are any case-studies / reference data on how to use ebay ( or how ebay is being used) as a promotion tool. What I understand is this can be an indirect way of advertising as Google also includes some product/service description results in organic index.

Hi!
Besides the search engine results, eBay itself can generate significant traffic (in other words, additional potential customers) for you.
The eBay Store "About the Seller" page can be used to promote your business. Reviews and Guides in eBay may gain you additional exposure.
There is a lot of good information about eBay marketing on the Internet (some free; some not).
