One of my clients has 5 domains, 3 of which are well-branded and well-aged, with plenty of authoritative links.

Somebody at corporate thought it would be a great idea to rebrand all 5 sites under one portal name that nobody has ever heard of. The 5 sites are only related in a broad sense.

They didn't even tell us about it, we just dropped by the site and noticed it had been replaced... with a nice, shiny 302 redirect as well.

So, we're covering that with them straight-off, but they want us to send an email with every other reason they should NOT continue with that course of action.

Branding stuff welcome, too. Any criticisms of their idea we could pass on, or are we overly-concerned?

Ask him if he knows everything about the cons of redirecting.

If he knows 301 redirects will definitely affect his ranks, about the new site being sandboxed, about all the old authoritative links to the 5 sites now being useless, and make up a logorithmatic formula showing him old site age vs new site age linking power advantage.

If your client is determined to do this sooner or later, then perhaps now's the best time for it. He gotta ask himself why he's gonna do this, is it to better monetize the 5 specific markets, to make a site into a huge authorative hub? For ease of company maintenance? To easily add different domains later on to expand on business?

Hope that helps...

Alan
