How Is Big Brand Link Building Done?
#1

If I was an SEO for wallmart's online ecommerce store, and decided that we needed more links, how would I go about doing this? I couldn't actually contact other businesses without the consent of Wallmart. I couldn't really spend the time going after personal homepages and blogs as a rep for Wallmart (that would just look sad). How is big brand link building done? Are there trade avenues to explore?

I'd concentrate more on advertising and brand building than on links for links/seo sake.
Will this bring you some link love? Yes. Even though it's not the main focus.

I see what you are saying. If the traffic comes in and the content is good and things onsite are set up properly thru testing etc... then bookmarking and linking will happen naturally rather
than us per say "building" links.

More likely, they get links by virtue of their brand name.

Maybe combing thru the existing links to double check for anchor text opportunities? Not all of them...but if a report uncovers 400 "click here" s maybe put in a few calls and emails to modify the mix abit could help?

And there are quite a few big companies that still buy links, look for traditional link building, etc. They tend to get stuffy about what can or should be done with their own Web sites, so they prefer that the "optimization" occur off-site in many cases.

So big brands often do need link building to help sharpen their link profile to become more keyword targeted.
