regarding link building for large brands, how is it done? I understand the why and the where (as in, deep link building and some other logically reasons for successful link building), but what I don't really know is the "how".

If I was an SEO for wallmart's online ecommerce store, and decided that we needed more links, how would I go about doing this? I couldn't actually contact other businesses without the consent of Wallmart. I couldn't really spend the time going after personal homepages and blogs as a rep for Wallmart (that would just look sad). How is big brand link building done? Are there trade avenues to explore?

IMO, the great thing about big brands is they rarely need link building. People link to them naturally, just the way it's supposed to be.

So if you have a big budget to play with - how to you fill it after all on page is mostly done - Social is a challenging area to tread in with the large brands.

That it is ! giggle.gif

I'd concentrate more on advertising and brand building than on links for links/seo sake.

Will this bring you some link love? Yes. Even though it's not the main focus.

I suppose you could say that past a certain point its more a matter of being aware of links, how they work & the value they do or do not bring. When opportunities come up, maximise them. Be aware of the potential link value of certain activities (Public relations, for example).

Maybe looking over the existing links pointing to the domains and making sure they are pointing to the best spots and using the best or varied anchor text? Would that be time well spent.

I see what you are saying. If the traffic comes in and the content is good and things onsite are set up properly thru testing etc... then bookmarking and linking will happen naturally rather
than us per say "building" links.

Big brands, I believe rank by the virtue of their brand name. It is highly unlikely that they would require link building of any sort for the purpose of search engine optimization.

More likely, they get links by virtue of their brand name.

Maybe combing thru the existing links to double check for anchor text opportunities? Not all of them...but if a report uncovers 400 "click here" s maybe put in a few calls and emails to modify the mix abit could help?

Big brands DO attract a lot of links. Nonetheless, many of them hire in-house SEO managers and nearly all of them now seem to have one or more external SEO consultancy relationships. One mega company may be managing search results through multiple departments.

And there are quite a few big companies that still buy links, look for traditional link building, etc. They tend to get stuffy about what can or should be done with their own Web sites, so they prefer that the "optimization" occur off-site in many cases.

Actually, big brands may have brilliant link equity - but the links are usually untargeted, ie, for company name, rather than commercially useful generic keywords.

So big brands often do need link building to help sharpen their link profile to become more keyword targeted.

For an example the big brands gets a lot of links from blogs that write about the viral campaign that costed $1.000.000.
