Starting An Seo Business Without Case Studies
Posted 07 September 2007 - 02:15 PM
I'm in the beginning stages of starting my own SEO company. I have about 5 years experience in SEO (3 years for an SEO firm and 2 years as an in-house SEO). Considering that all of my successes have been for former employers, how do I show potential clients that I'm good at what I do? I never signed a non-compete for the SEO firm - so is it ok to show a potential client work I've done for a former client? I'm just trying to figure out the most ethical way to show off my talents.

I would not show a site I optimised for a previous employer's clients because that client may not want an unknown person to know their money terms, even though their keyword meta tags might list them. Some won't like anyone to know they purchased an SEO service -- we had a chain of hotels who would not give a written testimonial for that reason, but they were happy to give an oral testimonial over the phone. An exception would be a site that has given a testimonial to the ex-employer and is listed in their online portfolio. They might be more amenable to sharing their keywords with others.
You should look for some pro bono work in return for a testimonial. Many non-profits tend to be in noncompetitive niches where little SEO is done, so you may see early success. I am now seeing top 10 rankings within a month on G and Y, but only in the noncompetitive areas.
