I have my images directory excluded from search engines with the use of robots.txt due to bandwidth use. How does this affect SEO? Does anybody know?

It has no direct effect on traditional SEO.
It may have some adverse effects if you're trying to get traffic from Image searches, but that's about it. Most people aren't targeting image search traffic, so that's probably a non-issue.
