I redesigned my site site menu a little by linking direct to subcategory store pages rather than just the main category store pages.
This resulted in me adding an extra 21 links to my sitewide menu, bringing total from 41 to 63 links in the sitewide menu.

I made the change so that all pages on the subcategory pages could be reached from anywhere in the site within 2 clicks.

My site typically ranks 35th-45th for its primary keyword phrase in google (obviously I want this higher, not lower). As soon as the new index page was cached my site fell 30-35 places. Its been like this for a week. Other pages on site dont appear to have been cached yet.

Is it pure coincidence that the redesign coincided with my sites fall in rankings or is it likely to be because of the changes? Should I revert back to old sitewide menu with less links? Why might google not like a change like this?

Thanks in advance for any help on this matter.

I wouldn't revert back yet excel. The two things may be completely unrelated.

I suggest giving it a good 3-4 weeks to let things settle in before considering changing things back. Because you can end up flip-flopping back and forth further confusing the issue for the engines.
