To illustrate, we sell battleships and we always submit to the shopping>military transport>battleships (or sim) sections, with a description about our battleships for sale and the stuff buyers want to know, such as the size of the guns on them etc., plus if there's room we'll mention other parts of the site, like the Battleship Photo Gallery, or the stories and articles section.

Would it be the worst idea in the world to submit to hobbies>military>battleships>cute-battleship-pictures and talk about our gallery, and if there's room mention that we also sell battleships?

My two main thoughts on this are that we want to promote the other sections of the site as they seem to be well received by many of our visitors, as well as letting the search engines know that we value the other parts of our site too and it's not just about sales and the index page. At the same time, I don't want to pretend that we're not a company or that making money from our site is not important.

While I'm on the subject, we have our main product that we sell (e.g. battleships) but we also sell battleship accessories, furniture and toys (you should see them battleships play!) - when the available sections don't exactly match what we sell or are too limited, would you diversify which products are mentioned or just stick with the closest match to your main product line? So for instance if the directory doesn't list battleships for sale but does list battleship furniture, would it be reasonable to just promote our line of furniture?

I don't see any problems with what you have in mind Rolf. It all sounds perfectly reasonable to me.

That said, at the end of the day it's still going to be the Directory keepers who have the final decision. Some will link to interior pages/sections if there's enough information there, smoe will only link to the home page. Either way, it's out of your control so I wouldn't worry about it much.

As long as you're only submitting your site once to each directory it shouldn't matter what section of your site you submit. Submitting sub-sections can be great for building deep-links for the engines to crawl too smile.gif

Just check what the directory guidelines say.
DMOZ does not allow the submission of deep links.
Also bear in mind that if you deliberatly flout the guidelines that you agree to when you submit a site, then you may end up with no listings.

Most directories do not allow submitting deep links but some do. There are two types of deep links directories:

1. Main page + Deep link (with different titles)
2. Either main page or deep link smile.gif

Check out the deep link list on directory critic. I use that for my sites smile.gif
