Social bookmarking is when someone adds a web page to their list of links, and those links are hosted so that others can see or use those links. I think the biggest hosts are Digg.com and Del.icio.us. There are aparently a lot of people who have no life, and they look at other people's links and click them to see what's going on. Then they vote on them. From what I read, most of the people who do this are young. So whether or not visitors who get to a site are potential customers would depend on what it is you are selling.
You have no control on who will Digg you. But you can make it easier for people to Digg you by adding direct links from your pages to the social bookmarking sites. I've just done that to all of the articles in the free hypnosis research library that I host this past week. We will see what we will see . . . . .
Article submission is when you submit an article that you've written to article directories. You have a lot of control here, because you write the article. And you create the links in the articles. So you control the link text. And best of all you control to a small extent how many people will read the articles based on which directories you submit them to. I've submitted to directories where an article has been read 5 times in one month. And I've submitted the same article to directories where the article was read several hundred times each month.
Article submission has been very rewarding for me. I think that the person who reads your article and then clicks your link is a highly qualified buyer, vs someone who finds you in the search engines. This is only my gut feeling though, because I don't code my links in the articles because I want the link love which has helped me in my SE ranking quite a bit.
But article submission is a tremendous amount of work too, because the submission process takes a lot of time, and you need to spin your articles to make them 30% or more unique to avoid the duplicate content filters.
Which is a perfect segway into why I visited this forum today. Does anyone have any information on how to go about getting more people to social bookmark pages on your site? And does anyone have any other interesting info besides the phenomena of Digg'ers loving lists with seven items in them?

Thanks for the tip Serpico.
By the way, I've been putting major effort into publishing articles for almost three months now, and the increase in my conversion rate has been phenominal. I am convinced that (for me) this is the most effective form of marketing.
