I have seen several topics raised on this issue but everyone seems to be giving people generic responses.

Just to set the record straight, something MAJOR has changed with Google.

We have been top ranked in Google # 2 out of 64 million search results for our key phrase < removed > (no quotes) for 7 years.

In February, for some reason, that 64 million changed to 48 million, and we dropped to page two. Then it changed to 24 million and we dropped to bottom of page two. Then it changed to 12 million total search results, and now we are literally nowhere to be found. Not even in the top 20 pages of Google.

We're not even there. We're gone.

1) How can Google have 64 million sites for a search phrase and suddenly drop to only 12 million?
2) Why in Gods name have we literally dropped off the face of the earth?

Another extremely peculiar thing: I went to Google's page rank checker, like I always do, and now you for some reason "< removed >" (no quotes) is an invalid search term:

< removed >

"Exception from service object: Problem looking up user record.
The typed word,
removed is most general!"

I know Google shuffles and shakes and jiggles and modifies, and normally I would just wait it out, and watch us pop back to the top, like we always have, but this has destroyed all our income for our site. Our sales have gone from 20 orders a day to 1 order a day. This is going to mean bankruptcy for me personally.

Naturally I emailed Google support with the urgent question asking what is going on, and they didn't bother to reply. Is there some tool out there that helps you see if you've been blacklisted or if you've violated some Google policy? There's got to be something. Some database to tell me if we're doing something wrong.

welcome to HR hi.gif

and BTW see the Forum Rules on keyphrases and live links.

1) These things happen. It could an index cleanup, an update, a new data rollout, a whole bunch of spammy pages getting dumped ( see 2a below) + many others

2) Any number of reasons
a/ You had lots of poor quality links that have just been devalued/deleted.
b/ You have been caught out doing something
c/ some update changed the weighting of your site

just three of the top of my head (no pun intended [although nobody will get that 'cos I edited it out biggrin.gif ])

That particular "tool" is nothing at all to do with Google

Lesson learnt there then. NEVER rely on free traffic, you never know when it will disappear.

Nope. Usually if you are spamming and get caught. You know what was being done.

If you need guaranteed traffic from search, you'll need to set up a PPC campaign.

I know it frustrates people that there isn't a formula for top rankings, or an easy way to find out why your site isn't ranking where you want it to, but that's the nature of SEO. Everyone thinks their site deserves to be #1, but Google has their own criteria for ranking- some of it is obvious, some of it not so obvious.

With a myriad of factors, there is no easy answer to why your site isn't ranking where you want it to just like there's no easy formula to make it rank well.

Google wants their searchers to be happy with the results. If you continue to make a site that really stands out and people love it, that's the kind of site G wants to return. It doesn't happen overnight- these days in may not happen the first year or two. But you can't count on G to fund your marketing by sending you free traffic.

Sorry, but you made a HUGE mistake.

If you were counting on free Google listings for your business plan...well, I don't even know what to tell you. We have tons of threads on why that is just not a good/smart idea.

This is your chance to make things right by doing some REAL marketing and advertising. SEO isn't that. It's extra. Always extra and nothing more.

Jill;

You make some very good business cents.

I had a this happen to a website was top in google with a Keyword and name of a state for over a year.
Something happen, like was said before. I know it may not every be known, buy it would be interesting to know WHY!

Some site adjust and some did not. This is real key because we spent so much time get high ranking. Now we have to start over. No matter free or not.

Lesson learned.

Cheers
