I guess I'm not sure why you felt you needed to change to a more traditional button considering your circumstances. For the moment anyway, I'd switch back to the higher performing button and consider this a test ... a successful test that proved your original impulses were leaning in the right direction. If you think you can improve sales w/ a new option, test it.
I think the intent of your buy/quote button is clear, but you might consider testing different shapes, colors, text combos, maybe accompanying text. Not that I've gotten very sophisticated at testing yet myself, but it seems the wise course if you think it will clarify things and have an impact on sales.

FWIW, I would set up the test to look at both the number of conversions for each and the $$$ volume produced by those two different types of conversions. By the sound of it the quote route is going to mean significantly more to you. But by the same token you don't want to miss out on all of those immediate purchases too. If nothing else they're getting your foot in the door, giving you an opportunity to upsell those customers at a later date.
