Hi
I did not know what PR was so I went on to google and read all about it and installed it. I have a question now. How come a site that is the first on the first page does not to my surprise get a PR of 10/10 or close to that. For example I searched horse and the first listing only had a PR of 5/10. Google explains PR as" PageRank is the importance Google assigns to a page based on an automatic calculation that factors in the link structure of the web and many other variables."
I would be glad if you could tell me how in practice this PR can tell me where my site stands.
Thanks :aloha:
PS I have tried sending some of you guys questions like this by email but so far I have got no answers. How does sending an email in this forum work?

HI Shervin, That is a really common train of thought, and one of the reasons I wish Google never decided to display PR publicly.

Page Rank is one of a hundred or so factors, and whilst a page might have a low pr0 it does not stop it being the most relevant for a SPECIFIC search term, unlikely maybe, but not impossible.

Lets say that the PR accounts for 20% of relevance within the Google algo, then even if a site has a pr10, the most it can have is 20% (these are made up figures by the way) that still leaves a whole lot of other factors that could out weigh the large PR by a ratio of 4:1.

Personally I don't worry about PR (unless it drops indicating something is wrong). I focus on the SERPs and getting all the other on and off page stuff right. PR normally then just creeps up as a result.

SERP=search engine rank page???
and if you can also answer my question regarding sending email to members of the forum, I would really appreciate it.

SERP = Search Engine Results Page. In other words, the results that show when you do a search on any search engine.

re: Mailing forum members. Speaking only for myself, I much prefer posts that are made to the forum itself. That way everybody can benefit from both the question and answers. Or, if there is umm...sensitive information involved I'd choose PM's over email. The forum sends me an email to let me know when a PM comes in anyway.

Other opinions may differ, but for myself I generally save email responses for clients.

Shervin,

Since this is a public forum, it's best to post your questions, etc., here in the forums. If you're looking to hire someone who posts on the forum, certainly it's fine to email them, but if you're just asking a question, you may not get an answer via email because we already spend too much time posting in the public threads.

The idea is for the entire community to benefit from the questions and answers.

Jill
