I run a web development company and it's quite dificult to have content that other sites really want to link to. As part part of a link building stategy I was thinking of having an unrelated page on our site, with valuable, link-worthy content. The content I have in mind would not be related to what we do but it's content that I'm sure that I can develop good inbound links to. The idea being to build up it's PageRank. This is legal content and not porn or films etc.

What I want to know is would this then give my other pages a boost in PageRank, namely my homepage? It's currently PageRank of 2.

Well... I'm confused. There's no way this content is possibly related to the rest of your site, but you are sure you could get links to it?

It sounds improbable, but there's nothing wrong with it if you can pull that off.

As the links would be from totally unrelated sites, I assume, it won't bring qualified traffic to your site, instead it may take up bandwidth and be wasted effort.

Are you sure there's no possible content that is related to your site that would be worth linking to?

Repeat after me: PageRank is not a goal! PageRank does not pay your hosting bill, cover the cost of your morning coffee or put gas in your car. Sites are not listed in PageRank order in Google.

PageRank is a numerical reflection of the value of the links pointing to your site and is only one of many factors that influence rankings. It's also usually wrong as it's rarely updated anymore.

There is lot's of content you could use... you just have to put in the effort to write it.

Not just that your hosting is better - but why. Be specific. Is it because you're not on email black lists? Why is that a good or bad thing? How does a laymen check that? So they can check your competition and prove it to themselves. Why do you run a windows server? Or not? What are the advantages or disadvantages? What are some of the ways you can help customers out when they change hosts? What are some of the pitfalls to changing and how will you help them avoid them? Why is it important to have a good host anyway? Why not just choose the cheapest guy out there? What about domain name registration? Why do you think it's good or bad to have it be the same company that you use to host your website. What are some included server side things that you provide - or your clients could sign up for - and why would they want to? What advantages does that bring them? How do you use them? What about success stories of clients that have used your service and have had positive results. What about scripts that you reccommend?

There is always related content. You just have to think of all the different things you could write about and get started. Then, not only do you have content, but it's orginal and linkworthy and you won't get filtered out for duplicate content you bought from someone else.

If that page links to your other pages, then yes, just like any page it would pass it's link popularity and PR. If it's just on your site but not linked to it, then no, just by being on your same domain doesn't pass link pop. or PR.

You could put the page anywhere (any domain) and link to your site and it would have the same effect. Being on your domain gives it no special powers.

PageRank is not nearly as important as you seem to believe.

Thanks Jill!!

The content would use a lot of bandwidth, so I may have to pull it eventually. As it stands I've enough spare but I can't predict how much it will use in the future.

Writing good content takes time. I've got all the relevant stuff on the there and it will be updated. Unfortunately, we just haven't got the time to really go for it and write exceptional, link worthy copy right now. There aren't enough hours in the day!!

That's why people have a newsletter or blog as it puts them on a schedule for writing. I don't think many people or sites would want to just sit down and write hundreds of pages of content all at once. That wouldn't be actually good content. Good content comes over time from many years of writing once a week or once a month, or whatever.
