Hi, I need info from SEO'ers with experience submitting to Inktomi? Does Inktomi spider beyond the page you submit via positiontech? Or is it a catch 22, you have to submit via positiontech every page you want displayed in there selected feeds?

Thanks!

Inktomi has two bots, one that crawls and indexes websites just like other search engine bots and the other one, which crawls pages submitted via paid inclusion. If you have some good links to your site, you will get into Inktomi’s database without ever paying. However if you prefer a guaranteed inclusion and regular indexing of your page, you need to submit each page separately or use trusted feed for larger sites. The paid inclusion bot will not go beyond the page you paid for.

I'd add to this, that if your pages are in the normal d/base, and you add them to the PFi feed, Ink seems to pull them out of the normal database - in a nutshell you are either in the natural or the PFi listings, not both. This also applies to the other feeds, in my experience, not just Ink.

I'd only really use the PFi route if it's a new site, or just on specific pages that change regularly, where 48 hour updates will make a difference to your clients (or your own) bottom line. For under $40/year though, it doesn't need a lot to make it viable.

They've gotten a lot better about this. It'll still happen from time to time though. (As Farhan points out, the two spiders/databases are different - and they sometimes seem to have a problem communicating with each other).

Several years ago, I had this happen to me and, at the time, INK had a rep hanging out over at WMW. Some topic came up regarding this and he asked for everyone who had had this happen to PM him. I did and it was fixed the next day (though it took INK several months to get back up to speed with the depths of my site).

Since then, when this happens, I recommend that people send an e-mail off to the reseller (positiontech or whomever) and to INK itself describing the problem (just make sure you were already in the INK database before you started paying). In all cases, the problem was fixed within a week or two (though there were a couple of instances where each party wrote back saying, "There's nothing I can do, you'll have to talk to <other party>." And we responded with, "I did, they said talk to you" (which they had).

I'm not sure who fixes it, but in the end, it can be fixed.

Ditto to what the others said. Inktomi's regular spider crawls the web and will crawl links it finds on any particular page. The PFI spider only crawls those URLs that are submitted to it.

IMO it is not necessary to submit via PFI as Inktomi does a pretty good job crawling on its own. The only reason to submit is if after a period of time you do not either see your sites pages indexed or you do not see up to date content from your site in their index, then you might submit the pages that are either not listed or not up to date. Such is my practice. :D

Are you referring to whether it is PFI or not? I guess you'd have to know if you had subscribed it or not. There is no distinction when viewing listings in the SERPs.

If you are simply referring to checking which pages from your site are listed in Inktomi, I go to HotBot and do an advanced search for "domain.com" and then add to domain filter the domain I am checking. It will show all pages it has listed for that domain.

hold on.. I think I usnderstand you... do a search for the domain.com as in abc.com and look for the listings from abc.com and you see what is listed at INK

Hi SB - keep in mind you can change your PFI page every 48-72 hours (main page to "blue widget" page, etc...). That way, you can see how your different pages are ranked. You can work on that, and eventually the natural INK spiders will pick them up to (hopefully) your liking. It's not a good idea to constantly "tweak", but you get the idea.

So hotbot.com some 2-3 days after submitting is the best way to check INK?

How often does Ink follow say a main page you submit and dig deeper into your site? Sometimes, never, eventually?

It is getting a bit much... LookSmart dropped out and so did my listings even though I had listed a pile at Ink... guess the sensitivity elements are different to Google... have 40+ number one terms and have a hard time finding us at MSN.

Okay this seems to be a little helpful.
