1)I have a website with many pages in it. I have optimized all the important pages of it based on the given keywords. There are also a lot of unoptimized pages left where even the title is left with the company name alone. Is it ok to leave those as such since I get results for the pages optimized so far. Or given a site, is it compulsory to optimize all its pages even it becomes a repetition of the already optimized keyword?

2)Also I have a lot of pages where content is taken from another site. For eg, since we are resellers of the product, we have put the product and details found in the other site into ours. Hence it becomes a lot of pages dealing with the products itself. In such a case is it wise to optimize all those pages going to technical details or only the necessary pages

Is it okay to optimize some pages but not all? Sure! It's your site so you can do with it what you would like.

However it's important to remember that each and every page of your site has the potential to be a Landing Page if it's properly optimized. So you could be selling yourself a little short by skipping the optimization of these pages.

What does your keyword research tell you? Are there phrases people are using in the search engines that would fit on those currently unoptimized pages?

If so, then definitely optimize them. If not, then don't worry about it!

If your site is so large that the task of optimizing all those pages seems monumental, just do a few at a time. You'll be able to look at each section with a fresh perspective. You don't want to optimize for just a handful of expressions. That would be inefficient.

Ideally, you want to train yourself to optimize pages as you create them.

Thank you all. I have optimized those pages where the keyword is relevant to the page. As you said other pages can also be optimized by finding other new keywords. But the thing is as I have said the content in them is specifically taken from a well known site. Suppose I resell mobile phones, I take the pages dealing with the types of mobiles, and the detailed description of each kind of mobile, from that site. In such a case if I optimize those detailed pages also wont it be thrown to light that its duplication from other site. Then I am afraid our site lose its importance.

I also wish to point out that our site has original content dealing with our main services as well. But since we have partnered we are using their content for the products part.

Why can't you re-write the content, or add product reviews gained from customers , written yourself, or lifted (legally( from review sites? This would make your product pages unique, would help customers buy (increased conversions), and also make you more money.

No I dont think its possible. Actually I work for the client, and they have insisted on the content taken from that site only. Our site with that duplicated content is online for more than a year and getting good rankings too.

Reviews of products are not necessary for the site as it is not relevant .

So do you mean to say they would reduce the importance of our site?

PS: Mostly here are all SEOs. Few only work for their own sites. Majority work for the clients sites. In such a case we have to go with the way client wants the content.

Didn't they pay you to give you advice on SEO? You should at least explain the ramifications of their choices to them. They may still stick with their choice, but it should at least be an informed choice, in my opinion.

Yeah the client has indeed been informed about it but yet they insist. My fear if it would somehow affect the site and due to that I have not optimized some pages

Make sure you have documentation that proves it is their choice for when it goes "pear shaped" and they try and blame you.

Do they realize that when you are duplicating THEIR content that it could be having an adverse effect on their site and its listings?
Much better to let the resellers write their own copy.

Hey, OWG - in regard to your suggestion of lifting (legally) product reviews from other sites - How do you go about that? I would love to use some product reviews from Amazon.com and some other sites but didn't know if it was allowed. How would I go about that - legally?

Also, if your site is large, long tail is your friend.
And your webstats program should be make full use. See which keywords and keyphrases and then you can optimize it from there.

Don't forget to use WordTracker or Keyword Discovery to find popular keywords people are searching on for which thay can't find your site. Those keywords won't show up in your webstats.

You should optimize as much as you possibly can without sacraficing quality content.
