It needs to be able to print and give a monthly overview (ie not required to click on each day to find out what is happening, though clicking to get extra info would be good). Not bothered about things like multiple users logging in or daily view, but a clean smart end-user look is important. Also a clear UI to edit and add events and allow repeated events, without masses of confusing options.
Does it exist out there? Happy to pay for the right thing.

Believe me I have Googled galore - but there's always the hope that there is a perfect solution out there (wherein lies madness I expect)

All the other ones I found were very bloated in code... so I coded my own.

Both seem to have the "events display on the month view" you seem to be looking for, and both are template driven to customize the look of the calendar to coordinate with your site.
Easy PHP Calendar (http://www.easyphpcalendar.com) will function like that as well. Helios Calendar (http://www.helioscalendar.com) is very flexible, with a lot of options as well. Easy to customize to match the look and feel of your site, too.
Hope this helps,

Very easy to install, configure, maintatin.. and pretty powerful for the price. Support is great. Heavily customizing should be reserved for intermediate/advanced programmers, but can be done.
Here is a sample of one i've installed. Not too active right now, but if you navigate back to November 2006 - you'll see some entries. You can mouse over and see a pop-up of each event - that's pretty cool.

I have been VERY happy with BosDates calendar from BosDev.com. It is may not be as simple as you want, but the price is very reasonable. It is PHP, solid, reliable, good support and it costs $99. It is a full-feature calendar, but I have had success in disabling the features my clients don't need. I have 6 clients now who have it installed and they are all very happy with it. My son's Cub Scout Pack are using it (pack78framingham.org/calendar/calendar.php) with 5 separate den calendars rolling up into a master calendar. It's all volunteer maintained, they figured out how to do it themselves -- I didn't do anything but set it up.
