AJAX is a great tool in the belt of a good web developer, but as with any great tool, it needs to be used in balance. There is a great deal of misunderstanding of AJAX and SEO. Most AJAX developers do not place indexable content or navigation on the page's initial load...THAT is the most common block to SEO with AJAX. The second most common problem is lack of unique URL's...Many AJAX developers try to load all the content on the same page (Just like Flash - linux_lover: good pint.). It's fine to do so but you need to think like a search engine spider and make sure that they can get to a unique page with valid, quality content. I have some colleagues who are AJAX developers, and one conversation we had sparked an article I wrote about AJAX SEO considerations. (www.hybrid6.com/webgeek/2007/01/ajax-web-20-and-seo.php). Hopefully it will shed a little more light on this topic.

All great posts.
I have considered using an expanding menu similar to the one at marksandspencer.com and amazon.
Another consideration has been the GRC pure CSS menu - www.grc.com/menu2/invitro.htm. For a website, I have alot of categories that I want to be easily located via a menu, but don't want to overwhelm the user. That's why an Ajax menu would be so attractive.
