Url And Shopping Cart Changes Affect On Seo

My company has been in biz for close to 30 years with 4 of them on the Internet. We are currently changing our website to be more friendly towards the user, especially with our new more efficient shopping cart. As of right now we have great PR and good rankings on Google for most of our keyterms. We are going to be changing the pages that Google has us listed with and we will have to re-direct traffic to our new static pages, which are full of relevant content. Our address is remaining the same, however, our static pages are changing their URL's (the URL's will be cleaner than before as well). The site will be cleaner and easier to browse, while keeping the pieces of SEO that made our site successful. Will making these changes hurt our visibility on Google or are these changes that will benefit us? Any suggestions or advice are appreciated.

It'll probably hurt a little bit in the short term. Since the old pages are going to be disappearing the engines will all need to pick up the new pages. You're wise to set up some redirects from the old pages to the new. Make sure your redirects will deliver a 301 Permanently Moved status code.

Expect the dip to last 4-6 months altogether. They'll start picking up the changes after a few weeks, but for the entire process to complete it takes a few months.

We are on page 1 currently for most of our keyterms. We are in a relatively static industry with a decent amount of competition. How far do you think it is possible for us to drop, and what is the biggest key for our comeback on to the first page.

It's impossible to say with any certainty Brian. There are simply too many factors at play when the page filenames all change, not the least of which is the amount of competition there is in the market or the amount of external links you may have pointing at your current interior pages.

I've seen sites drop to the 50's range, then bounce back in a few weeks. And I've seen others drop into the 100's or worse and take several months of slow climbing to get back to where they were before.

If you're doing so well, what made you think your previous URLs were "unclean"? Why change them?
