I have been using a domain now for about 9 months. I have been contemplating changing domain names, which I know is a bad idea. In essence, if I switched from my current domain to a new domain, I would be throwing away 9 months of time in regards to the seach engines and sandbox related affects?

Hindsight is in fact 20/20. After 9 months of experience, not that it's a lot of time, I have a list of things I would do differently.

Scottie has a great article regarding this subject at http://www.rightclic...eo/redirect.php. It essentially involves setting up 302 temporary redirect until new domain is established and then changing it to a 301 permanent redirect.

A change in website direction will require a new domain name along with site name.

If a change is going to be required for business/branding purposes anyway, you're usually best off to get it done as soon as possible. Just make sure you've thought through it all and have a good plan going forward. Speaking from personal experience, it's faaaaaaar less painful doing it early on than it is to wait until things are rockin' and rollin' to make the switch.

The article David mentions above is your best bet to keep the lag time as short as possible. Just remember that the new domain is going to start out having to survive through the aging delay again.

I know. That's the hardest part about even contemplating this change. At this early in the game, I don't think I would be losing much with my current site given it's low/no rankings.

Then you should just do it now.

Yup, I concur with Jill.

Do it now. 302 the old domain over to the new. Put all of your efforts into the new domain. Try to get some buzz started out there to support the new site to get it through the next several months. Then when it finally emerges from the aging delay change the 302's to 301's.

Much more sensible to bite the bullet now than to wait.

You have to do what's best for your business.

It doesn't sound like you are changing domains as much as totally changing direction. Why not keep the current site, and build a new one as well?

Not knowing what the topics are, it's hard to say. If they are different but related, maybe it's worth it to devote your efforts to the new one, but keep the existing one as well.

Just a thought!

In our first months we had the same decision to make, we changed for branding purposes. I would recommend dumping it as soon as you can, no redirects. We occasionally run across the old domain from time to time (WHOIS and stale Alexa records) but after almost a year and a half it’s just about completely faded away. We are very glad that we made the change.
