I have long enjoyed the High Rankings® Advisor, but somehow failed to notice this super cool forum. Lots of good info here.

Normally when I run into a question, I can find the answer pretty quickly with some searches within this site or on the web. Right now I am stumped, though.

In November of 2005 I created a site about my belgian malinois dogs. Then in January 2006 I helped a friend to create a website for her dog training business in Los Angeles. Very quickly, my malinois site had top ten rankings for almost anything I added into a header, except the most general word "malinois". The LA dog training site showed up much lower in google for her key words, something like top 50.

I thought, ok, maybe she has more serious competition for her keywords- things like "los angeles dog training". So, I told her to work on generating incoming links. She found bunches of sites that would trade links places that would even list her with no exchange. We rejected all the ones that showed no page rank, or looked dodgy in other ways, like no Real Content, spammy content, etc. In any case, shortly after adding some outgoing and incoming links, her site dropped out of the top 100 in google.

I did some research and decided this might have something to do with the "sandbox". We decided to continue adding content and watch the site in MSN, where she has gradually risen to the top of the pack (#2 for "los angeles dog training"). Her Yahoo! rankings are also good. But, now a year has gone by and she is still almost unfindable on google, though not delisted. If you search for her name "rebecca setler" she is #1 in google. But for the important terms, she is off the map.

Can anyone shed light on this problem?

January 2006 isn't quite a year ago yet. Many new sites have 9-12 month delay periods, so I wouldn't panic yet.

Sounds like you are on the right path- keep adding good content and relevant incoming links.

Thanks for the encouragement. I thought that I should see some improvement after 9 months, but I can wait a few more. It really is nuts, though. Page 1 on MSN, page none on Google.
