Oh you poor thing- nothing to be impressed about! wink1.gif Glad to be of help!

A 302 still works fine for a new site transition (despite rumors to the contrary) but that's really all you want to use it for. Once the new domain is aged, you want to make it permanent and it sounds like your domain is properly aged already. smile.gif

Another good thing to note is that you can usually see results in about a week- so if you try it one way and it doesn't seem to work, try the other.

I understand that generally speaking a 301 is done at registrar level. I have the ability to do a 301 for an entire domain on the server it resides on. Both the new and old sites reside on the same server. Does it make any difference to the bots/se's where the redirect is done?

Thanks!

Step 1: Get Webbug.
Step 2: Enter URL in the box.
Step 3: Press the 1.1 radio button
Step 4: Click the "Get" button.

If the first line in the second text boxey area is:

HTTP/1.0 301 Moved Permanently

One of us isn't understanding the other and I don't know if it's you or me. I know how to do the redirect if you're trying to tell me how to do it. What I need to know is if it matters ref seo/bots/rankings etc *where* the redirect is done. Or doesn't it matter as in "done is done" whether it's at registar level or server level.

As long as the http header thingee gives off a 301 in the end, it makes no difference what route it took to get there.

It sure looks like it is. You type in the old name and up comes the new site w/the new site name. I've done redirects from the server in the past, but never thought to ask if it made a difference where it was done from. Thanks so much, Jill!

Did you check if it was showing a 301 like ProjectPhp mentioned? Looking like it's redirecting correctly doesn't really tell ya much.

Now that I finally figured out what he meant (I was dog tired when I first read his post and didn't "get it") - yes, just grabbed/installed/followed the steps and it shows;

HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently

Nope, a 301 redirect is done at server level

Well, now what do I do? Is this panic or "wait it out" time ... ???

I 301'd the original site last week. Up until today Google showed the old site links that were cached from May 5 which I expected would happen. Today neither site is even on the horizon. Do I back up and do a 302? Or is it normal for things to disappear for a time (how much time?) when you do something like this?

Thanks.

fairly normal,

a redirect is not an overnight thing, it takes a little while for things to settle in to place.
Just leave for a few weeks and DON'T CHECK IT EVERY DAY!!! that will only frustrate you.

Nah, I won't check every day - haven't so far - it may sound like it but I did miss a few days <g>. Now that I know the switch is done I won't check so much as I was. I was just curious how long it might take and then I saw what I saw. I didn't realize it would take a settle-in period and that's what I was trying to determine with this post. I really thought it would be quicker being that the old site was very well established. Thank you.

Give it a week or two... you can change the response at any time if you want to test and see what happens, but you need to give it a chance to take effect before you make changes.

My hosting company has their URL Redirect set to return a 302 Object Moved and not a 301. If I keep my redirects setup this way, will the 302 hurt my ranking?

It could, depending upon the specific situation.

The issue being that a 302 sends a mixed, and sometimes quite confusing message to the search engines. If a page has really moved and it's a permanent move you'll want the server to deliver a 301 Moved Permanently status code. There are times a 302 is more appropriate, so it depends upon the specifics of the situation.
