A very basic Qs. Please don't mind...
With reference to Inktomi's geo-targeting algo. which disturbed many US and UK listings: How do SEs (all major ones) apply their regional algo. I mean does it use domain's extention like .com .uk .org or it's IP address to identify domain's region.

The major search engines that have country specific search sites try to first filter results by the top level domain (.uk, .au, etc.). Then I'd suppose they would try to filter by relevant content such as language, topic, etc.

Hi Ajit,
some filter by domain, and some also use the physical location of the server' I am looking at a case currently though where one site is a .com, Physically located in the US but showing up on a co.uk search. Hopefully I will work through this over the next week or so and at least then will have a better idea.
For safety sake though the best way is to opt for a region specific domain. .nz , .uk etc

Does it mean...If I have a .com (which I suppose was for US region, but now used globally) domain hosted in ASIA, SEs will still consider it as part of US results and won't consider my physical hosting location, thus affecting my rankings in any way?
Also can you tell me which all SEs currently apply regional algo for showing SERP?
I currently have a .com domain hosted in INDIA which was affected after Inktomi applied its geo-targeting algo. The MSN.com traffic which used to be 65% of total traffic, fall down to almost 5% and is still same. So I was thinking if shifting my hosting location to US would have any effect.

We discuessed this a few months ago.
In google, if your domain is hosted in the UK but is a .com, it will show up in both the world results and UK results.
With yahoo, however, even if your domain is hosted in the UK and it's a .com, it WONT show up in the .co.uk results. Only .co.uk's are shown. Hopefully google will fix this soon. There are many uk sites that are .coms.
There was actually no solution for me to get into the .co.uks at yahoo, short of setting up a new .co.uk domain name and starting again. As I already had numerous backlinks and getting good traffic from the SERPs I did not think it worthwhile.
