News Page Question
Posted 24 December 2003 - 03:38 PM
We recently added a News Page in which we abstract current news articles related to our industry. We also added a spot on the bottom of our home page which lists the newest three abstract titles with clickable links to the news page.
Google has been great about picking up these really quickly. If I search for the news title from just a day or two ago it has picked them up.
My question is -- Google is picking up the news title from the front page which by the time the person finds it on google, it might be gone. (Since the front page always has the three most current titles.)
Does this matter?
We are doing the news page to both help with our Google rankings and provide meaningful information to sales prospects and clients.
Thanks for any thoughts you might have on this.

The archive needn't be one that goes back too far, if you don't want it to. It only needs go back as far as the life of the original indexed page in Google. Probably 6 weeks or even less would be sufficient.
If you don't have access to a programmer, I would imagine that you could hire one to do that for you for $50 or less. (Much less if they are familiar with the inner workings of the news feed you are using at the start).

Seriously, though, that would work, but I'm assuming that the purpose of the news feed is to keep fresh and topical stuff on the site without interaction by you. Thinking about it, it's quite possible that whatever you are using has some way of archiving (or repolling for older news on another page) built right into it. There are so many different news feed readers and translators out there, its' hard to say what features you may already have on board.

On the front page it has the headlines for the most current three abstract and there is also a nice link that says go to News of the Day page.
On the News Page it has all the stories, 10 per page, plus an archive and a search archive feature.
If the user googles and gets an old one that isn't there on the front page anymore, they should be clever enough to know to go to the news page and find it.
Do I gain or lose anything with Google rankings by having it set up this way? I didn't know if it would be weird for the google spiders if it's changing all the time.

Hey, your Grumpus turns into nickname Grumpy. Maybe I should call you Grumpusy instead.

Glad my nonsense was of some use.
