We have one medical domain aged 8+ years which I'll call oldbrand.com, and the other is 5+ yrs, which I'll call newbrand.com.
The complication is that oldbrand.com is ranking #4 for our main keyword, while our higher-ups would rather use newbrand.com for future marketing efforts.
I don't have immediate access to the site yet so I used the liveheaders extension, and it looked like we are using a 302 redirect to send oldbrand.com to newbrand.com. I've never used the extension before so I couldn't be sure if I'm reading the tool correctly. I know we're not supposed to post domains, so if someone would be kind enough to take a look, I'll PM it to them.
My question is - if we are using a 302, and change it to a 301 redirect, would Google then take the age of the newer domain into effect? We would probably slip out of the top 10 if that were the case, given how much that age seems to come into play (at least according to SEO Firefox stats).
I don't want to have two linking campaigns running, so I'm struggling with how to set this marketing campaign up. I don't want to cost them rankings and traffic in the process of expanding their SEO efforts.
Anyone encounter a situation like this before? Anyone follow what in the world I'm talking about - clear as mud to me
