Just read Jill's article on buying text links:
www.highrankings.com/buyingtextlinks.htm
I also read not too long ago about Google bowling - where blackhat competitors put sitewide links to YOUR site on other related sites - and this is supposed to DECREASE your ranking etc.
When I first read about this it seemed weird, a sitewide link, to my site, from a relevant site - and that hurts my ranking?
Does anyone have comment on this? Is this related to the 'buying links footprint' phenom.
Lastly, at work we often put a link in the footer pointing to who designed the site etc. and I think a lot of web designers do, haven't noticed a drop in rankings for our site though.

Sitewide links have nothing to do with google bowling or "footprints" of paid link ads.

Okay, cool, cos that kinda had me a bit confused/worried. But I honestly thought the whole thing was about penalising companies for buying site wide text links - what is google bowling?

Google bowling is when another site (probably a competitor) attempts to get your site penalized by submitting it to all sorts of crappy places, or whatever else they think might be a bad thing for your site. For instance, some competitors of mine have used my site for guest book spam over the years. Luckily, what your competitors do, can't actually affect your site, as long as you actually do have real links and a great site.
