Moving From One Dynamic Shopping Cart To Another
Posted 10 October 2006 - 09:15 PM
For many reasons, we need to move to another shopping cart but we have just hit our first anniversary and we don't want to lose any traction we've gained with Google.
Of course, when we move, the new cart will generate different urls. Any advice on how to smooth the transition and not loose momentum with Google?

Probably want to see our 301-redirect thread and forum.

You may be able to get the .htaccess to 301 redirect your new website and products.
You are right that you will have different URL's
What shopping cart are you going to be using for your new store..?
See if you can replicate the URL's as monstercommerce
If not just use the .htaccess 301 redirect however you may be writing redirects forever.... depending on how many products and urls you have....

I know about 301 redirects, and I understand how to edit htaccess files to accomplish the redirects, but what if these pages don't exist anymore, which is what happens when we move the cart, and since we are using a hosted software package, we can simply reinstall and create the pages.

With server-side redirects it doesn't matter if the old pages exist anymore or not ellenthompson. The server would never allow the old page to be displayed anyway since the redirect takes place before delivery.
Please realize though, that if you're changing all of the URLS you are going to lose some rankings for a time. 301's take effect immediately, but the engines will typically take 4-6 months to get it all straightened out on their end. So plan for that much slow time.
If your site does heavy business during the Christmas season, you may even want to hold off until after it's over with.

|The Christmas buying season is just heavy on my mind right now mitash. |
No matter how early I start working on updates for the Christmas season (this year I started pointing at Christmas in mid-June) it seems like I still end up scrambling to clean up the last few items in October, even though I always plan to have it all done by Sept 15th at the latest.
