I am testing the trial version of X-Cart and would like to add a menu (to all pages) that when a visitor mouse over, would pop up menu items. Is that possible to do within the X-Cart admin framework, or do I have to code my own (maybe javascript) and find where to insert it in the php source code?

I've just been fiddling with an X-Cart site. The system is based on PHP and Smarty templates. The source code is open, so you can customize whatever you want. I like it very much.

That said, it's a very complex bit of software, so you probably want to get an experienced contractor, or plan to invest some time to learn it yourself.

Be careful about Javascript menus. It's very easy to make them unspiderable.

There are plenty of mods and add-on's you can get

For menus you could use this...add-on

x-cart.com/fancy_categories.html#online_demo

Alternatively you can also get a developer to do the same for you...
